http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/advocate
I speak for myself, and other homeless people I know speak for themselves; none of those who are styled as “homeless advocates” here in Boulder speaks for us. Strike definition 1.
How can anyone defend, encourage, or otherwise support the state of being homeless? It ain’t a good thing. Strike definition 2.
Who is really promoting the best interest of Boulder’s homeless community? Certainly not the apologists for and enablers of its worst-behaved members. Strike definition 3.
What, then, are we left with? I submit that the folks who are actually doing good works in the trenches on a daily basis don’t seek the label of advocate. They simply go about their business without forming alphabet soup groups like HOME — Homeless Ordinance Moratorium Endeavor (directed from behind the scenes by staff at Carriage House).
Please, you media types out there, can’t we have a better term than “homeless advocate”?
And remember, people, I’m a Homeless Philosopher and Commentator. Don’t ever call me a “homeless advocate” — them’s fightin’ words to me.
