Since I’ve been asked about this, here is what I’d do about it here in Boulder if only I were King:
1) I’d close Carriage House downtown (capacity of 25 persons per order of Boulder Fire Marshal) and move it to the excellent and roomy facility of Boulder Shelter for the Homeless (capacity 160) at 4869 N. Broadway. Current staff of Carriage House would be retained, of course.
2) I’d have it open from 9AM to 3:30PM every day of the week.
3) I’d continue to serve a hot lunch, and provide sandwiches and snacks to go.
4) I’d continue to provide visiting nurses from People’s Clinic, mental health professionals, and others to provide different services needed by many in Boulder’s homeless community.
5) I’d turn the current TV room at BSH into a computer room, with a minimum of 10 stations providing Internet access to aid in job searches, etc.
6) I’d have a professional security guard on duty.
7) I’d have a Boulder Public Library branch built nearby in the north Boulder area.
Again, I point out the advantage to everyone in Boulder of consolidating services as much as possible into the best facility available here. A “Homeless Services Campus”, if you will.
