For all of the do-gooders in Boulder who continue to be in denial about the negative impact of transients from Denver and elsewhere, see this Daily Camera guest commentary by Frank Alexander, director of Boulder County Housing and Human Services:

There must be scores, and perhaps hundreds, of homeless people in Boulder who have recently come here from Denver and elsewhere and applied for various benefits at BCDHHS. Almost every weekday, I see more of them get off the Boulder Shelter free bus at Broadway & Iris — to apply for benefits like food stamps, Medicaid, etc.

I have no doubt that Denver city and county authorities will do everything within their power to see that as many homeless people there as possible are counted in the upcoming U.S. Census; then, they’ll “encourage” them to migrate to Boulder and other cities to make use of the social services elsewhere.

It’s a GIANT SCAM, and Mayor Hickenlooper is the main culprit.

How do you like it now? When Boulderites in need throughout our county will be hurt because of crooked pols in Denver? Granted, Frank Alexander didn’t address this specific aspect of the budget crisis — but it’s entirely possible that there is no accurate way to determine how many who apply for benefits here are actually from elsewhere.

We do know that Boulder in general has a reputation as a soft touch for anyone wanting to exploit both the system and people’s goodwill. Now we also know that this has a substantial cost attached.

Perhaps nothing can be done in re government services, but private nonprofits can certainly give priority to Boulderites in need.
